USAGM Watch Commentary
Several conservative and liberal U.S. media outlets have received e-mails from Voice of America (VOA) journalists, federal employees of the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), urging them to make the Biden administration, the U.S. Congress, and the American public aware of their management’s order not to call Hamas “terrorists.” Known for over a decade for being the worst U.S. government agency to work for, the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which includes the Voice of America, is led by former VOA director (2016-2020) Amanda Bennett and a team of longtime USAGM and VOA executives and managers. Bennett has frequently praised them for their “excellent leadership.”
USAGM and VOA employees, as well as critics in and outside of the U.S. government, see it differently. They have repeatedly contacted outside media to report on examples of poor leadership and mismanagement. Their efforts resulted in a Washington Post report on the hiring by the Voice of America and USAGM of journalists, whom their VOA colleagues described as former Putin’s Russian state media propagandists.
VOA broadcasters are complaining to media contacts about poor employee morale throughout the federal part of the agency and being afraid to voice openly their concerns about mismanagement.
